Thomasson Archive

This is a site for people that go on walks and find the oddness of the constructed world interesting and sometimes beautiful. It is only just starting (2026), so the map will be pretty empty until you add your observations. It is inspired by Hyperart: Thomasson and radio aporee, built from a techno-optimism grown when modems scratched and screamed our way into a connected world.

In 1972, the artist Genpei Akasegawa began noticing the things cities keep without knowing why. In 1982 he started sharing them as a column in Shashin Jidai, where readers began submitting their own discoveries. Bus tours were organized, NHK covered the phenomenon, and Akasegawa's students established the Thomasson Observation Center to systematize the search.

This site continues that practice.

The specific terms of this search are outlined in the Hyperart guidelines. The history and concept are covered in full on the context page.
